BNP has submitted its proposals to the Health Sector Reform Commission. The party believes that only an elected democratic government can implement these reforms.
On Thursday, a five-member delegation led by BNP’s Health Affairs Secretary Dr. Rafiqul Islam submitted the proposals to the Commission’s office at the Shaheed Abu Saeed International Convention Center on Minto Road in the capital. Before submitting the proposals, they had a brief discussion with the members of the Commission.
After submitting the written proposals, BNP's Health Affairs Secretary Dr. Rafiqul Islam told reporters, “Any kind of reform is an ongoing process. Only an elected democratic government can implement these reforms.” He added, "We have submitted the proposals and told them that not only BNP but all stakeholders involved in health should be consulted, and the proposals should be kept for the next democratic government to implement."
The delegation also included BNP’s Health Affairs Deputy Secretary SM Rafiqul Islam, Rafique Al Kabir, Parvez Reza Kakon, Planning Affairs Deputy Secretary Nazrul Islam, and Nursing Affairs Secretary Jahanara Khatun.
A 12-member Health Sector Reform Commission was formed by the interim government, with Professor A.K. Azad Khan, president of the Bangladesh Diabetic Association, as its head. The commission has not yet finalized its report.
Meanwhile, on Tuesday, BNP's Standing Committee member and former Health Minister Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain held a press conference at the BNP Chairperson's office in Gulshan, where he presented the party's plans and reform proposals for the health sector. The plan for reforming the health sector was outlined in three phases: short-term, medium-term, and long-term. The plan also expressed a commitment to establishing a "universal health system" in Bangladesh based on the model of the United Kingdom's National Health Service (NHS).
At the press conference, Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain said, “If the people choose BNP in the upcoming elections and send us to government, we want to assure the public that we will make every effort to implement all the reforms we have presented in the health sector.”
